Job Summary
Begin an exciting career with the City of Salem! The City of Salem is seeking energetic and service-oriented individuals who are interested in working in local government and a team-oriented collaborative environment.

This recruitment is for multiple departments within the City of Salem and may be used to create a six-month eligible list of qualified applicants for future hiring needs in other departments. If made a job offer in a department you do not wish to work in, you may decline the offer and be left in the eligibility list or if you are no longer interested, you may withdraw your application and be removed from the eligibility list.

The Staff Assistant is responsible for providing general administrative support to their assigned unit or department. Essential job functions may include answering phones, assisting customers at the front counter, responding to varied inquiries, explaining policies and procedures, routing mail and correspondence, balancing, posting, and correcting a variety of financial documents such as purchase orders, recruitment requisitions, etc., managing the public record request process, taking and transcribing advisory board minutes, assisting others in the office where needed. Some departments may require you to apply for and receive a notary certification.

The successful candidate will possess the skills necessary to provide exemplary customer service, effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, quickly learn and apply a variety of City and department policies and procedures to the appropriate work situation, maintain good working relationships with other employees, agencies and the public, and perform work effectively during changing priorities and interruptions.

Please note, some positions may require possession of an Oregon Driver license and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards and/or Criminal Justice Information System clearance and Law Enforcement Data System certification within 30 days of hire (clearance must be maintained throughout employment). Applicants will be notified if they need to meet these requirements prior to an interview.

You must attach and submit your proctored typing certificate with your application. The City will accept proctored tests taken in the last 12 months from July 5 2020 to July 12, 2021.

To take your online typing test contact David Lorenz, Goodwill Employee and Community Education, at dlorenz42@gicw.org - the test must be proctored. Services are provided Monday through Friday from 7:30 am. to 4:00 p.m. Please plan accordingly.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Some positions may require possession of an Oregon Driver license and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards or alternate means of participating in meetings and coordinating work at other locations.
  • High school graduate or GED and five years of progressively responsible clerical experience, including operating a personal computer and accurate data entry/transcription, or any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • Typing certificate required - 40 wpm with 95% accuracy rate; some assignments may require 60 wpm with 95% accuracy rate.
  • Some positions may require passing a criminal background check necessary to obtain Criminal Justice Information System clearance and Law Enforcement Data System certification within 30 days of hire (clearance must be maintained throughout employment).
  • Bilingual skills preferred.
