To further the spiritual and religious mission of the Catholic Church's call to minister to the poor and vulnerable, the Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the property and individuals. Security Officers must be able to handle the pressure of interacting with a high volume of the general public, volunteers, and employees in a professional, calm, and effective manner. Using initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines while performing duties is required.

Security Officers control access of vehicles and visitors into the Marian House complex. Requirements include conducting foot patrols of perimeters, parking lots and other high traffic areas, as well as interiors of the Marian House and Hanifen Center.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Monitor guests' actions on the property ensuring they stay off the property until 9:30 am, remain orderly while in line, and do not arrive intoxicated or high. Security Officers will tell guests to abide by the rules or leave the property if they refuse. If guests refuse to leave the property, officers will call the police to come and remove the guests.
  • Screen people coming through the front doors prior to 9:00 am and after 2:00 pm ensuring that only staff, volunteers, and donors are entering. Keep guests from wandering into the building, stop them and ask them what they need.
  • Restrict guest access to the proper areas of the soup kitchen. Enforce rules of conduct for all guests by verbal warning or by escorting guests from property. Intervene verbally or physically when necessary in all conflicts between guests in order to provide a safe and secure environment.
  • Monitor guests' actions while in the dining room. Ensure guests conduct themselves in an orderly manner and do not stay longer than 30 minutes. Ensure guests do not take the main serving line food, plates or utensils from the dining room as they leave. Ensure all persons are appropriately clothed and if not, refer them to the clothing department.
  • Warn violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking in other than designated smoking areas on property, or carrying forbidden articles.
  • Enforce agency/department policies and ensure that no damage to the property occurs.
  • Serve as witnesses during any suspension hearing for guests who do not follow the rules according to the policies set by management.
  • Prepare accurate, clear, and legible written reports on accidents, incidents, and suspicious activities that require documentation and follow-up. Reports involving guest behavior will include details about the incident, statements made during a hearing, and resulting action to be taken. Maintain a log of all incident reports and file correctly to provide an accurate record of past incidents. Maintain confidentiality of information shared at hearings and in reports.
  • Use active listening skills and assess/evaluate situations effectively. Identify critical issues quickly and accurately.
  • Watch for irregular/unusual conditions that may create security concerns or safety hazards and report them to a manager.
  • Keep high levels of safety and security standards at the forefront. Remain alert, courteous, and helpful at all times.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Sound alarms or call police or fire department in case of fire or presence of unauthorized persons.
  • Observe departing guests, volunteers, and employees to protect against theft of company property, and ensure that authorized removal of property is conducted within appropriate guest requirements.
  • Provide assistance to guests, volunteers, and employees in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Assist operations managers in receiving donations and unloading delivery trucks to ensure a smooth donation process.
  • Assist with closing duties (cleaning and folding tables, lifting mats, sweeping and moping, etc.).
  • Monitor traffic at the loading dock and loading zone in front of the Marian House allowing only donors or the Marian House trucks to park there. Direct guests to appropriate parking areas in the lot, and inform a manager to call a tow truck when a guest refuses to move their vehicle.
  • Understand and adhere to all departmental training and checklists.
  • Assist with monitoring, reporting, and enforcement of rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Be knowledgeable of the locations of first aid kits and fire extinguishers, and know how to operate the extinguishers properly.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum six months of experience as a security guard or similar experience.
  • Experience dealing with difficult guests who may be found ineligible to access the Marian House/Hanifen Center is a plus.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
  • Proficiency with American Sign Language (ASL) a plus.

General Requirements

  • This position is primarily scheduled to work Saturday and Sunday. However, shift work is required and a change in scheduled shift may be necessary to accommodate department needs. Hours of work encompass fluctuating tours of duty to include week days, weekends, holidays, occasional evenings, and special events. Overtime may be required as directed by supervisor, and the position is subject to recall for periods of emergency overtime. Must have availability to work any shift Monday Friday (5:15 am 4:00 pm), Saturday (5:15 am 3:00 pm), and Sunday (5:15 am 11:00 am), holidays, and occasional evenings as required.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills exhibiting understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, cooperation, concern, and politeness to others.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply relational and culturally appropriate skills in interactions with guests, co-workers, volunteers, partner agencies, and other community members.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), problem solving, listening, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to form and maintain positive work relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to speak and articulate in English, communicate idea/concepts verbally to the appropriate audience, with an emphasis on verbal radio communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and operate in a high volume, time sensitive, fast-paced environment.
  • Must wear prescribed uniform and protective gear.
  • Must successfully complete CPR certification and first aid training.
  • Ability and willingness to work within the established structure of Catholic Charities.

Physical/Mental Requirements

Must be fully capable of performing normal or emergency duties requiring moderate to arduous physical exertion such as:

  • Standing/walking for an entire shift mostly outdoors, climbing stairs, running, and self-defense.
  • Work in various environments including adverse outdoor conditions such as cold, rain, snow, or heat.
  • Bend/twist at waist/knees/neck to perform various duties.
  • Capable of handling a 25 pound fire extinguisher, frequently lifting 40+ pounds, and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 100 pounds.
  • Capable of lifting or assisting in lifting a person in the case of building evacuation.
  • Constant mental alertness and attention to detail required while setting priorities and following up on assignments.
  • Experience in nonviolent conflict resolution, good judgment, and ability to handle and defuse escalating situations to avoid a physical fight or assault.
  • Constant use of eyes (correctable vision to normal level required) to observe, read, interact with public, volunteers, and employees, view security monitors; includes hand/eye coordination.
  • Read, understand, and clearly speak English; constantly use speech and hearing (correctable to normal level required) in communicating with public, volunteers, and employees, giving/receiving instructions, using phones.
  • The participation of security oriented training that will include, hands on, physical intervention training.

Work Environment

  • A majority of the assigned duties are performed outdoors.
  • The employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.

$12.27 - $13.28 per hour DOE



Full Time - 36 hours/week


Must have availability to work seven (7) days/week to accommodate scheduling changes within a small department. Shifts are generally scheduled one (1) week in advance for the entire month, but changes may be required to provide coverage depending on department needs.

The weekly schedule for this position is expected to cover the hours shown below, but days/hours are subject to change.

Saturday and Sunday - 17 hours

Monday - Friday - 19 hours
