JFF is deeply committed to providing access to enriching work-based learning experiences through its 2021 Internship Program. The summer internship program will provide a cohort of highly motivated interns with an opportunity to contribute to JFFs work, develop valuable skills, and work in an equity-centered, innovative, and mission-driven environment.

Program Details

Over the course of 11 weeks, interns will gain exposure to JFFs bold, transformative programs and operations. They will work under the guidance of team members on high-impact projects in specific JFF departments.

Interns will receive a thorough onboarding to JFFs culture and programmatic areas, participate in workshops to build critical leadership and professional skills, and attend brown-bag lunch workshops for professional development and networking opportunities. They will also be paired with a JFF mentors who will support their internship experiences. At the end of the 11 weeks, the interns will present summaries of their projects to members of the JFF community, sharing reflections on the impact of the initiatives they worked on and discussing what they learned during the internship program.

Summer Internship Positions

Below are overviews of each open internship position, followed by application instructions. We look forward to hearing from you!


Advancement Unit

The intern will partner closely with an internal project team and the California Community College system to examine racism in higher education. The intern will conduct detailed and comprehensive research about the role of policing in higher education to inform the teams agenda and identify and develop solutions. Responsibilities will include attending task force meetings, taking notes, and summarizing meeting outcomes and next steps.

Advancement Unit (Communications)

The intern will support the migration of the Pathways to Prosperity microsite to JFF.org and assist in the creation of a new resource repository for PtoP Network members. The intern will help create content for the site, assist with the design and layout of web pages, and help troubleshoot problems and make corrections to the site. This position will also include opportunities to do research, planning, writing, and editing in support of other Advancement Unit projects.


The intern will support the execution of fundraising strategies, help the team conduct prospective donor research, and track and manage information in our client relationship management system, Salesforce. This position will introduce the intern to day-to-day portfolio management tasks, and it will include opportunities to explore various aspects of fundraising work, such as quality control, grant proposals, and event planning.

Inclusive Regional Economic Development Unit

The intern will help plan and produce a virtual meeting of the Future Ready California Network in August. Specific duties will include helping the team draft agendas, research ideas for speakers, create a digital outreach plan, make professional contacts with partners in the field, and develop virtual breakout sessions. The intern may also provide support by coordinating regular team meetings, taking notes, and reviewing and updating the project plan.

Learning Unit

The intern will research education and workforce development policies in Student Success Center Network states in support of ongoing quality improvement efforts. The intern will also help manage resources and information, and perform data collection, cleansing, and basic analysis. Other duties include testing the usefulness and reliability of materials, reviewing documents to provide edits and feedback, and helping edit online materials.

Policy & Advocacy Unit

The intern will provide administrative support for JFFs Congressional Staff Network briefings and site visits. Other duties will include conducting and compiling research on policy and advocacy initiatives while working with staff to stay at the forefront of issues and trends affecting the field. The intern may also be asked to take notes at congressional hearings, conferences, and other events (remotely) and, on occasion, draft content.

Research & Analytics Unit

The intern will conduct a literature review and develop a state-of-the-evidence report. The report will seek to address the most critical and pressing questions facing JFF; it will summarize key findings and make recommendations for further analysis. The intern may also attend and take notes at various meetings and help update departmental databases.

Work Unit

The intern will play a key role in planning and executing interview-based qualitative research. This will include creating interview guides, attending interviews, analyzing results, and providing general administrative support. This role will give the intern an opportunity to develop research design, data analysis, and story development skills. In addition, the intern will take part in team meetings and knowledge creation activities and have an opportunity to conduct research and write a funding proposal.

JFFLabs: Acceleration and Employment Technology Fund (ETF)

The intern will focus on developing a mini market scan to inform JFFs future work and exploration of technologies used in areas such as job training programs, social networking, and career services. The intern will provide support for various aspects of go-to-market advisory and/or digital transformation projects, including client exposure, deliverable creation, and research. Additional responsibilities include transferring company research data from spreadsheets into a universally used database tool.

JFFLabs: Corporate Leadership

The intern will assist with day-to-day project management tasks. This will include creating workplans, managing workflow, and monitoring deliverables to keep teams on track. The intern will be a contributing member of the Impact Employer Framework team, helping to determine standards and benchmarks. Other responsibilities include occasionally supporting events and meetings and compiling news reports and other updates related to human resources and corporate practice changes to assist with the drafting of blog posts or other written products.

JFFLabs: Data

The intern will conduct data analysis to help the team find solutions to challenges presently facing the workforce development community. Using data exploration techniques, the intern will aim to discover new questions or opportunities, identify key questions and hypotheses that need to be answered, and measure and monitor the performance and accuracy of the model.

JFFLabs: Employment Technology Fund (ETF)

The intern will support efforts to conduct due diligence on potential investments and will play an important role in daily operations while also having an opportunity to go deep in a specific workforce technology area and then compile a report and presentation to craft pitches. This is a hands-on opportunity for an individual with an interest in investment analysis and social impact investing to make critical contributions.

JFFLabs: Operations and Incubation

The intern will develop a standard operating procedure for the LLC for a variety of complex operations. To do that, the intern will conduct research, develop a landscape analysis of current competitors or tools (i.e., My Best Bets), and create a set of recommendations for how JFF and JFFLabs can leverage the LLC for other initiatives and products. Familiarity with developing business operations and recommending entity structures and models is a plus.


How to Join the Team:

Interested applicants must be available 30 to 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for 11 weeks, beginning Tuesday, June 1, and ending Friday, August 13. Interns will work remotely for the summer of 2021, and they must have internet access at their chosen place of work. JFF may provide a company-owned laptop for the duration of the internship program, if needed.
