The College is similarly committed to enriching its educational experience and its culture through the diversity of its faculty, administration and staff.

Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Humanist Chaplain position. The Humanist Chaplain is a part time, academic year position averaging 7 weekly work hours. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

Interestedcandidates are asked to submit a resume and cover letter online at https://amherst.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/Amherst_Jobs . Please be sure to upload all requested documents in the first step of the application process. Applications cannot be revised once submitted. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Applications will be reviewed during the last two weeks of June, 2022, and invitations to interview expect to be sent out beginning in early July.

Summary of Position:

The Humanist Chaplain serves a vital function in the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life (RSL) in supporting our Humanist, atheist, agnostic, secular, and spiritual but not religious (SBNR) community (particularly students), and our broader campus more generally. While primarily focused on Humanist programming and pastoral care, the Humanist Chaplain also contributes to interfaith, contemplative, and service programs sponsored by RSL. Not all students served by Humanist programming will have heard of Humanism or identify as Humanist, thus the charge of this position more generally is to offer meaning-making and values-based spaces that speak to intersecting and diverse identities.

The Chaplain provides a welcoming ministry to a diverse student population and College community, and takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce by participating in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. The position mainly requires weekday work hours, with the exception of creating and facilitating a weekly evening program at a time to be determined. Flexibility and availability for select additional evening and weekend programs (e.g. panels, vigils, etc.) is expected.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Programs
  • Provides for Humanist programming on campus and makes all reasonable efforts to accommodate the spiritual needs of Humanist and SBNR students as well as faculty and staff
  • Provides programs for students to contemplate and discuss questions of meaning and values
  • Researches how to create a thriving Humanist community on campus, and developing plans and programming to support such a community
  • Participates in Religious & Spiritual Life programming (e.g. interfaith panels and service events, Baccalaureate, vigils, retreats)
  • Participates in College committees as eligible and able
  • Makes provision for weddings and funerals for the campus community and alumni/ae as requested and as available

Advising
  • Advises the Humanist Group (pending its reinstatement), leading their weekly meetings and working with student leaders to offer special events and gatherings as appropriate
  • Provides pastoral care and guidance to students and other members of the campus community as requested and appropriate
  • Serves the campus community in times of crisis

Administrative
  • Holds regular office hours
  • Attends regularly scheduled Religious & Spiritual Life staff meetings
  • Communicates in a timely manner with students and staff, balancing weekly hours between on-campus commitments and responsive attention to communications
  • Remains current with trends in chaplaincy through membership and service in the Association for Chaplaincy and Spiritual Life in Higher Education (ACSLHE) or comparable organizations and professional development opportunities

Qualifications

Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Trained in Humanist thinking and able to facilitate Humanist contemplative practices
  • Organizational and pastoral care skills
  • Ability to teach Humanist tenets and reflection practices, and provide a welcoming ministry to a diverse student population and College community

Preferred:
  • Master of Divinity or Philosophy (or equivalent) with focus on Humanism
