Aspen Global Innovators Group

The Aspen Global Innovators Group is a policy program within the Aspen Institute focused on widening access to health and prosperity for people living at the world's margins. The Executive Director position is based in Washington, DC and requires the steady presence of its Executive Director at this location. Our network of innovators pioneer breakthrough strategies, grounded in lived experience, to address global health and development challenges in new ways. Our portfolio of programs include: New Voices Fellowship, which brings expert voices from emerging countries into the global development debate; AMP Health, which builds the leadership and capacity of public sector health leaders in under-resourced countries; Healthy Communities Fellowship, supporting local leaders who are spearheading community initiatives that address health inequities; Aspen Institute Forum on Women and Girls and its SOAR fellowship lifting up emerging women leaders and critical policy issues; The Global Collaborative for Community Based Pandemic Preparedness spotlighting the essential role of community based organizations in addressing COVID; the Artisan Alliance, supporting women entrepreneurs; and Aspen Ideas Health, the leading creative forum on health.

Position Description:

The Aspen Institute is seeking an Executive Director of the Aspen Global Innovators Group to guide and lead the growing portfolio of work. The Executive Director will develop strategy, manage staff, design new programs, manage finances, fundraise, forge new partnerships, and represent the program externally. The Executive Director is responsible for oversight and management of all Aspen Global Innovators program resources and staff. Aspen Global Innovators Group seeks an experienced, committed, and energetic professional with deep experience in global development, especially in Africa, leadership development, breakthrough and innovative strategies to address global health, poverty alleviation and leadership. The successful candidate will have expertise in African leadership development, global health, and an exceptional track record of innovating new programming to address the challenges of global development, managing small to medium sized teams, developing world class programs, fundraising multi-million-dollar budgets, and possessing exceptional communications skills.

Essential duties and responsibilities are as follows:

Program Strategy, Management, and Implementation

  • Develop, implement, refine, and grow program strategy and impact
  • Grow program portfolio to meet the challenge of a new and more equitable vision for development assistance; lead breakthrough strategy to meet changing times
  • Identify, design, and implement new programs
  • Oversee and manage all AGI projects run solely by AGI or with AGI's participation in collaboration with partner programs at the Institute including New Voices Fellowship, AMP Health, Healthy Communities Fellowship, Aspen Forum on Women and Girls, The Global Collaborative for Community Based Pandemic Preparedness, Artisan Alliance, and Aspen Ideas Health
  • Lead strategy refresh of AGI with team
  • Provide strategic guidance and oversight to program directors on project management, financial viability, impact, workplan, and coherence with AGI mission and goals
  • Lead programs including Global Collaborative for Community Based Leadership in Pandemic Preparedness, Vaccine Equity Working Group, and Healthy Communities Fellowship
  • Ensure highest quality program activities in accordance with mission and values, and maintain systems of accountability and impact
  • Represent Aspen Global Innovators Group to Aspen Institute management, staff, board, and external audiences

Fundraising and Financial Management

  • Manage fundraising from foundations, corporations, individuals, and governments to support all AGI programs and core staff to include program design, grant writing, donor relationships, and ensuring receipt and monitoring of funds
  • Develop annual and program budgets together with Senior Program Associate and program directors and participate in monthly budget meetings with each project and core staff
  • Together with Senior Program Associate identify financial challenges and identify and implement solutions
  • Oversee all financial and donor compliance with Senior Program Associate

External Relations and Communications

  • Identify and develop strategic partnerships, external relationships, and new opportunities
  • Develop external partnerships for greatest impact
  • Work in partnership with Program Directors to maintain highest quality philanthropic relationships
  • Contribute to AGI strategic communications plan and serve as external spokesperson
  • Strengthen communications and brand of AGI

Knowledge, Education, and Experience:

The ideal candidate for this role has the following desired skills/experience:

  • Skilled executive with a minimum of at least 10 years of senior-level strategic leadership experience spanning the private, public and/or the nonprofit sectors with significant international experience
  • A track record of working internationally with senior-level stakeholders in the private, public and/or nonprofit sectors on multi-million-dollar programs and initiatives in global development or global health
  • Deep understanding of global health and leadership development in emerging markets
  • Extensive experience directing teams on diverse programs and projects: strong preference for professional experience in Africa
  • Highly organized, goal-oriented self-starter who excels at handling multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and management skills, including supporting and mentoring global teams
  • Strong budgeting and financial management skills
  • Ability to represent Aspen Global Innovators Group at high level events and interface with external partners speaking knowledgeably on topics connected to global health and global development
  • Thrives in big picture possibility and strategy and can also hold the details needed for high-quality execution
  • Proven ability to engage, inspire, and influence diverse leaders and communities of color and transcend divisive fault lines
  • Demonstrated project planning and high-quality execution skills
  • Entrepreneurial acumen and drive, ability to see and respond to opportunities to strengthen and/or course correct to increase impact; ability to vision and raise funds for new initiatives
  • Thrives in high performing, intellectually rich environment and as part of a collaborative team
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Willingness and ability to travel
  • Second language skills such as Spanish, Portuguese and/or French a plus
  • Master's degree in relevant discipline required
