Job Summary:

Working closely with curatorial staff and colleagues in the Exhibitions, Art & Learning Engagement Department, assisting with planning and implementing exhibitions, including scheduling, transportation, and preparation for multiple indoor and outdoor exhibitions each year. Oversee object registration and art collections activities for temporary exhibitions and the Gardens' permanent art/history collections by performing a variety of tasks in a fast-paced environment. Primary duties include, but are not limited to, assisting with the installation of all indoor and outdoor exhibitions, managing gallery and exhibition maintenance, condition reporting, inventorying and cataloging art collections, crafting and implementing policies and procedures for collection management. Works collaboratively with artists, other departments, and outside partners to support institutional goals.

Compensation: Bi-Weekly $1,738-$2,173

Qualifications/ Experience: Two years related experience in a museum setting or like environment where technical duties included registration and/or object cataloging and care. Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university with a concentration in art or art history, history, library sciences, museum studies, related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. Experience with art handling and coordinating transit and insurance for art desired. Collection database experience preferred. Operational knowledge related to collections/exhibitions security, environmental controls, integrated pest management, and other best practices for collections and exhibitions management. Volunteering and intern management are a plus. Attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and creative problem-solving skills are a must.

Essential Job Duties:

Exhibitions

  • Reserve facilities for exhibitions, including outdoor installation and re-installation activity.
  • Maintain exhibitions and galleries including ordering replacement materials for interactives, coordinating with suppliers, and communicating with Operations for maintenance and security needs.
  • Monitor gallery conditions, including temperature and humidity, integrated pest management
  • Participate in the installation of artworks both indoors and out and in a variety of weather conditions, including site supervision of art handlers and/or assisting with physical aspects of the installation.
  • Manage exhibition volunteers during installations and re-installations.

Registration Incoming and Traveling Exhibitions

  • Write condition reports and create photo documentation for exhibitions; prepare and manage reports for lenders and borrowers.
  • Maintain documentation of installation and re-installation activities, including process documentation, route maps, and exhibition installation checklists.
  • Coordinate loan agreements and insurance/customs paperwork for exhibitions.
  • Occasionally serve as artwork courier, assist with coordinating transit and insurance of artworks.
  • Communicate with registrars and couriers from other institutions to coordinate registration needs, installation requirements, including any condition changes.
  • Oversee unpacking and packing of exhibitions as well as crate logistics.
  • Manage daily condition checks, documentation, and maintenance of exhibition artworks on display indoors and out.

Collections

  • Manage ongoing collections activities within AAM best practices, including cataloging, inventory documentation, condition reporting, and rehousing.
  • Manage Integrated Pest Management activities for the art collection.
  • Monitor art collection storage climate and coordinate with Operations and other collections stakeholders as needed to maintain appropriate climate standards.
  • Manage ongoing object maintenance including regular checks, cleaning, and waxing of outdoor sculpture. Coordinate with City of Denver Public Art and/or outside contractors for repairs or conservation.
  • Manage collections interns/assistants at both York Street and Chatfield locations.
  • Contribute to the creation and updating of collections policies and plans, including coordinating with other collections staff and departments.
  • Act as Exhibitions department lead for non-living collections disaster planning, including updating collections plans, maintaining supplies, and coordinating staff training.

Other Job Duties:

  • Support exhibit-related public events, including staffing
  • Represent the entire Exhibitions department and the Gardens to key constituents and funders.
  • Maintain satisfactory working relationships with managers, co-workers, and others.
  • Maintain a positive, helpful, and solution-oriented demeanor when responding to or serving members and visitors.
  • Perform other duties as requested by management.
